A Night of Unity, Honour, and Aspiration
August 2023 will be etched in the annals of the Australian Cadet Corps as a historic moment, marked by the hosting of its first-ever formal dinner at the prestigious Toukley RSL. Toukley RSL was all too happy to help host this event in acknowledgement of the first Cadet Unit of the Australian Cadet Corps being formed close by just over 12 months prior to this event. The dinner was a grand celebration, not just a gathering, embodying the spirit, achievements, and future aspirations of the Corps.
The evening was graced by esteemed dignitaries, including Commissioner Trent Aylward, The Honourable David Harris, MP, Minister for Veterans, Minister for Medical Research and Minister for the Central Coast and Toukley RSL Sub Branch President, Mr Ian Collier.
Gathered in a spirit of camaraderie
Lieutenant 1st Class Deanna Barnes, serving as the Master of Ceremonies, set the tone with her welcome, “We gather here in a spirit of camaraderie and unity, to celebrate our achievements, our commitment, and our shared passion for the values and principles that bind us together.”
Lieutenant Barnes also welcomed honourable guests including members from the National Leadership Team and volunteers from all over NSW seeking to join the Officer ranks to assist in establishing new Cadet Units in their areas.
Opening Address from Snr. Sgt. Pollard
Senior Sergeant Maximus Pollard, aged 17, gave the official opening address. His address was a poignant reflection of the Corps’ journey and aspirations.
“Tonight, we are not only gathered to celebrate our shared achievements but also to forge a tradition that symbolizes our unity, our commitment, and our aspirations,” he stated, acknowledging the significant community support from figures like Mr. David Harris.
His speech was a powerful reminder of the Corps’ impact and its vision for the future.
Commissioners Address
Commissioner Trent Aylward’s address to the cadets was particularly inspiring. “You are the living testament of our core values. Every day, you choose honesty, order, and honor. Through your actions, you teach us the true essence of leadership,” he remarked, underscoring the cadets’ role as the heart and soul of the Corps. His words were a testament to the strength and potential of the young members, inspiring them to continue their journey with courage and commitment.
The Commissioning of the Flags was a ceremony rich in tradition and symbolism. “The Colours of a unit embody its spirit, its pride, and its honour. They are more than a mere flag. They signify the heart and soul of the unit,” the Master of Ceremonies declared, marking a significant moment in the Corps’ history.
Promotions and a bright future
Promotions were a proud highlight of the evening, with several cadets being recognized for their dedication and growth. Cadet Daniel Pallibino and Cadet Finlay Dodds were promoted to Lance Corporal, Lance Corporal Micah Lawrance and Lance Corporal Marcus Connor to Corporal, and Corporal Simon Connor to Sergeant. This segment of the evening underscored the Corps’ commitment to nurturing its members and celebrating their achievements.
The Cake Cutting Ceremony symbolized the union of the past, present, and future. “As the knife slices through the cake, let it remind us of the unity in our diversity, the strength in our collective spirit, and the bright future we’re carving together,” the MC stated, encapsulating the essence of the Corps’ journey.
Overwhelming Support from Community Leaders
The evening also included addresses from community leaders, with Toukley RSL Sub Branch President, Mr. Ian Collier, expressing his unwavering support for the Corps. “Their support illustrates the strength of our community, its commitment to the values we uphold, and the shared dedication to the development of our youth,” the MC noted, acknowledging the significant contribution of the RSL Sub Branch.
The inaugural formal dinner of the Australian Cadet Corps was a resounding success, a testament to its growing prominence and commitment to fostering leadership, camaraderie, and excellence. As the Corps looks forward to more such events, this evening will be remembered as a pivotal moment in its journey, a celebration of unity, honour, and aspiration that will inspire the leaders of tomorrow.
