ACC Commitment to Child Safety

We maintain a zero-tolerance approach to child abuse and neglect, prioritising the safety, wellbeing, and empowerment of all young people. We foster an inclusive, accountable, and supportive environment, continually reviewing and enhancing our practices to uphold the highest standards of child safety.

Zero Tolerance for Abuse

The Australian Cadet Corps (ACC) maintains zero tolerance for child abuse and neglect of any kind. We are dedicated to fostering a culture of accountability, responsibility, and proactive leadership to ensure the safety and wellbeing of every child and young person participating in our events and activities.

Equity and Inclusivity

ACC is committed to clearly documenting and communicating the roles, responsibilities, and expectations of all adult members, including leaders, officers, and volunteers. We actively promote equity and inclusivity by recognising and effectively supporting children from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, LGBTQIA+ youth, and youth with disabilities or additional needs.

Screening Measures & Training

Our robust recruitment processes include thorough screening measures to ensure all adult members are suitable to work with children. ACC officers receive ongoing education and training to uphold child-safe practices, empowering them to respond appropriately to any concerns or allegations of abuse.

All Officers and Adult Members re required to:

  • Undergo an Initial Officer Entry Interview with the Commanding Officer of the Cadet Unit
  • Undergo an official Officer Entry Interview with Senior Leaders of the ACC
  • Provide a Working with Children Check clearance in the State / Territory in which they reside
  • If progressing through the Officer ranks, provide a National Police Background Check
  • Participate in Child Safety Information Sessions and Policy Reviews that occur twice per year
  • Participate in a series of Child Safety Training topics

Appropriate Reporting Processes

We prioritise clear, two-way communication with youth members and their families to create transparent, supportive environments. ACC is committed to taking swift and appropriate action in response to any reported child safety concerns, adhering strictly to our comprehensive reporting procedures.

Continuous Review

Through continual review and improvement of our policies, procedures, and practices, the Australian Cadet Corps remains steadfastly dedicated to providing a safe, nurturing, and empowering environment for all young people in our care.
