Riverwood Cadet Unit Commemorates 79th VP-Day Anniversary with Kingsgrove RSL
Cadets from the Riverwood Cadet Unit proudly participated in the 79th Anniversary VP-Day Service held at Kingsgrove RSL, where they honoured the sacrifice and service of Australia’s veterans. The ceremony, held to commemorate Victory in the Pacific (VP) Day, was attended by veterans, community members, and local leaders, all gathered to remember the dedication of Australian servicemen and women.
Riverwood Cadets played a significant role in the service, showcasing their dedication to community and ceremony. The unit’s band performed music throughout the event, adding a solemn and respectful tone to the occasion. Additionally, Cadets performed ceremonial duties, adding to the reverence of the service with their disciplined precision and commitment to honouring our veterans.
A highlight of the ceremony was the wreath-laying on behalf of the Australian Cadet Corps, where Riverwood Cadets respectfully placed a wreath on behalf of the Commissioner and the entire organisation. This act of remembrance was a powerful moment, symbolising the ongoing gratitude and respect that today’s youth feel for those who have served.
Sub Branch President Mr Alan Barnes OAM extended heartfelt thanks to the Cadet Corps for their attendance and support at this special event. He acknowledged the Corps’ commitment to the RSL Sub Branches and expressed his appreciation for their participation, which adds a unique depth to ceremonies like VP-Day by bridging generations through shared remembrance.
The Australian Cadet Corps takes pride in instilling values of service, respect, and community spirit among its members. By participating in events like the VP-Day Service, Cadets are not only reminded of Australia’s proud military history but also learn the importance of honouring those who have made tremendous sacrifices for their country. Events like these offer Cadets an opportunity to actively engage with the legacy of the Australian Defence Force, helping them to appreciate the freedoms and values we hold dear today.
The Riverwood Cadet Unit’s involvement in this year’s VP-Day Service is a testament to the importance of community engagement and historical remembrance. The Australian Cadet Corps is committed to providing experiences that foster respect and understanding in our youth, ensuring that the sacrifices of the past are never forgotten.
We thank Kingsgrove RSL and Mr Alan Barnes OAM for inviting the Cadet Corps to participate in this commemorative event and for their ongoing support of our efforts to connect today’s youth with Australia’s rich legacy of service and sacrifice.
