Leading the next generation in Shepparton

Celebrating our newest addition to the Australian Cadet Corps

Shepparton Sabres first Commanding Officer

We sat down with our newest Commanding Officer, Greg O’Brien, to discuss his lifelong passion for youth development, what inspired him to establish the Australian Cadet Corps in Shepparton, and why he believes today’s young people need strong mentors and opportunities to lead more than ever before.

Getting to know Captain Greg O'Brien

When you speak with Greg O’Brien, one thing becomes immediately clear. Helping young people grow isn’t simply something he does. It’s something he has dedicated much of his life to.

As the inaugural Commanding Officer of the Australian Cadet Corps’ new Shepparton Unit, Greg brings more than five decades of youth leadership experience, an unwavering passion for mentoring, and an enthusiasm that has never faded.

“I first became involved in youth leadership at 19 years of age,” Greg explains. “Now, at 72, my enthusiasm for helping young people achieve their goals has not diminished.”

Over the years, Greg has watched countless young people grow into successful adults. Many have remained in contact long after leaving the programs he led.

“Many of those young people are now married and have children of their own. Some even have grandchildren. It’s incredibly rewarding to see where life has taken them.”

That commitment to seeing young people succeed is exactly what drew Greg to the Australian Cadet Corps.

“What attracted me was the organisation’s strong focus on leadership, discipline, community spirit, and helping young people become confident and capable individuals.”

Since joining the organisation, Greg says he has been equally impressed by the culture behind the scenes.

“There is a fantastic culture amongst our leadership. Everyone encourages one another, and there is a genuine focus on delivering quality programs while supporting our volunteers to do exactly that.”

It was this shared vision that inspired Greg to take on the challenge of establishing the Australian Cadet Corps in Shepparton.

Recognising the need for more positive youth development opportunities across the region, Greg worked alongside Australian Cadet Corps leadership, volunteers, parents, and local supporters to bring the new unit to life. After several months of planning, promotion, and preparation, the unit is now ready to welcome its first cadets.

For Greg, the Australian Cadet Corps is about much more than uniforms and ceremonial drill.

“It’s about giving young people confidence, resilience, leadership skills, and a place where they feel they belong.”

The program welcomes young people from eight years of age and provides opportunities to participate in leadership activities, first aid, navigation, teamwork challenges, fieldcraft, community service, physical activities, camps, and adventure-based learning. Every activity is designed to help young people develop practical skills they can carry with them throughout life.

Greg believes the program has something to offer every young person.

“It doesn’t matter whether someone is naturally outgoing or quite reserved, sporty or academic. Cadets gives everyone the opportunity to challenge themselves, make friends, and discover what they’re capable of.”

His favourite part of youth leadership has remained unchanged throughout the years.

“The most enjoyable part is seeing young people challenge themselves, succeed, and grow. Being able to positively influence and support young people as they develop into future leaders is extremely fulfilling.”

As the Shepparton Unit begins its journey, Greg hopes it will become a lasting part of the local community.

“Our goal is to build a strong and sustainable Cadet Unit where young people can develop leadership skills, form lifelong friendships, and give back to their community.”

With Greg O’Brien at the helm, the Shepparton Australian Cadet Corps Unit is being built on decades of experience, genuine care for young people, and a simple belief that every young person deserves the opportunity to discover their potential.
