Unforgettable Experiences and Lifelong Friendships: Cadets Camp 2024 Recap

Cadets Camp 2024 brought together cadets and officers from across the region for an action-packed weekend of skill-building, leadership development, and camaraderie. Held from 6-8 September at the scenic Crosslands Youth & Convention Centre in Galston, NSW, the camp provided an immersive experience that combined challenging activities, teamwork, and a celebration of the Cadet spirit.

From the moment cadets arrived on Friday evening, the atmosphere was one of excitement and anticipation. After settling in and meeting fellow cadets, everyone enjoyed a welcoming supper generously provided by Mr. Ansourian, setting a warm and friendly tone for the weekend. This introduction allowed cadets to connect and prepare for the busy schedule ahead.

Saturday was filled with a wide range of engaging activities, including canoeing, orienteering, fieldcraft, and night games, all designed to help cadets develop teamwork, resilience, and confidence. Drill and band training were particular highlights, as cadets showcased impressive discipline and dedication while honing their ceremonial skills. Officers also organised Leadership Training sessions, guiding cadets in essential qualities like communication, decision-making, and teamwork—key traits that define the Cadet Corps.

An important aspect of the camp was the emphasis on safety and wellbeing. Officers conducted multiple Child Safety Training sessions to reinforce the Corps’ commitment to maintaining a safe, supportive environment for all members. These sessions provided cadets and officers with essential knowledge and practical steps to uphold high standards of safety in all activities.

Saturday evening’s formal dinner, hosted by Leadership Commander Maximus Pollard, was a highlight of the camp. Cadets and officers alike enjoyed a memorable evening of camaraderie, reflecting on shared experiences and celebrating the journey each has taken in their cadet involvement. This event also marked a special milestone for several cadets from the Tuggerah Lakes Unit, who received promotions in recognition of their dedication and growth.

In addition to the camp activities, officers held a special Officers Meeting to discuss the future direction of the Cadet Corps. During this gathering, they collaboratively set goals and objectives that will drive the Corps forward in the coming year. This meeting underscored a shared commitment to building a stronger Cadet Corps and providing meaningful opportunities for youth development, leadership, and community service.

The camp concluded on Sunday with a memorable final parade and band performance, where cadets demonstrated their progress in drill and discipline. The impressive march-off marked the end of a successful camp, leaving cadets and officers inspired and ready to take on new challenges. Parents and caregivers were invited to witness the closing ceremony, allowing families to share in the pride and accomplishment felt by all in attendance.

Commissioner Trent Aylward’s closing remarks reflected a vision of growth and opportunity for the Cadet Corps, with an ambitious goal to expand membership by doubling the number of units in the coming year. “Next year, we want double the number of cadets by doubling the units,” he shared, inspiring everyone to imagine a future where even more young people benefit from the values of service, discipline, and leadership that define the Corps.

As cadets departed Crosslands, they left with newfound friendships, enhanced confidence, and lasting memories. The 2024 Cadets Camp was a testament to the power of community and the positive impact of youth engagement. With sights set on an even larger gathering next year, the Australian Cadet Corps looks forward to welcoming more cadets and officers for another unforgettable experience.
